Above ground pool decks aren't something people think of too often when deciding to install above ground pools. These people may be one of two camps of pool owners: the ones that spend all their time in the water or the ones that use that pool as an afterthought to sunning. The ones that use the pool constantly are the ones that tend to overlook the inclusion of above ground pool decks as part of the installation. If you are one of these people then you don't have to be concerned with these oversights as many pool dealers now include deck installation as part of their pool packages. Above ground pool decks can be an inexpensive way to improve the quality of your above ground pool and help beautify your backyard pool area.

Types Of Above Ground Pool Decks

There are two types of decks for above ground pools: attached decks and freestanding decks. Both are equally functional, it just depends on the room you have as to which you should have installed. An above ground pool deck that attaches to the pool will completely or partially wrap the entire pool. Even a partial wrap will have a path roomy enough to walk around the pool. These decks can be totally customized to your specifics. Usually they extend to and include a patio to your back door. There is plenty enough room to lounge in the sun and even cook out. You might want to consult a professional designer if your dream deck is rather extensive. As above ground pool deck designs are part of their specialty, designers can offer some money saving tips.

Wood Above Ground Pool Deck

Freestanding decks are basic platform and ladder setups that fit close to the pool and provide simple pool entry. The platforms are big enough generally for two people to stand on but these kinds of above ground swimming pool decks are not meant for play or lounging. There will be two ladders, one for ascending to the platform and one for entering the water. The platform is gated and also has a locking mechanism for security when not in use. Obviously this is the cheaper route to take and the easiest to install. It comes in an easy to assemble kit and takes about an hour to put together.

One reason this type of above ground swimming pool deck is ideal is that it doesn't require an expensive underpinning like an attached deck, which are most likely constructed of wood. The underpinning on an attached deck can be as expensive as the entire prefabricated stand alone deck. The freestanding underpinning is made of rust resistant metal, usually steel, and assembles quickly.

Of course there is nothing like the elegance of above ground pools with decks made from wood. If your budget provides it, opt for this choice. Wood decks can include both types and are made from pressure treated materials like cedar, red wood and some tropical varieties. Copper Azole and Alkaline Copper QUAT (ACQ) are used to treat the wood and keep it from premature rotting, fungal decay and insect pest damage. These are copper based, non-toxic chemicals that are environmentally safe to use around water making them ideal wood preservatives for above ground pool decking.

If you choose to include a wood deck in your above ground pool deck plans then you might consider doing the work yourself, especially if you have some carpentry skills. This will save you in labor costs that come from hiring professionals. Check out the following video on deck installation. It's just under nine minutes long and will give you some great above ground pool deck ideas.

above ground pools look great with decks a friend of mine had a deck built around hers and it was beautiful. It made her yard look great and even upped the value on her house believe it or not.

There is something to be said about above ground decks in terms of the way it looks in your yard, along with how it feels to be in the pool that is elevated above your yard.

I agree with the assertion that having a deck for your above ground pool is a good idea. It does make it look 100% better and can help with the value of your home should you ever want to re-sell. My only concern is safety. Can these be secured so small children cannot accidentally enter the pool area?

I don't see how those stairs work to that freestanding above ground pool deck?
